Ethical Development Action is hosting a one-day conference on Biofuels and Food Security on Friday 13 June 2008, immediately following after the FAO Summit on World Food Security and the Challenges of Climate Change and Bioenergy in Rome the previous week. (Flyer) The conference brings together speakers from the developed and developing world to assess the impact of biofuels on global food security, at a time when staple food prices are at record highs and food riots are becoming a common occurrence in developing countries. Go to Biofuels Conference Page Speakers from Ethiopia and Brazil will highlight the impacts faced by one of the main food- importing countries in Africa and the major food and biofuel exporter of South America. A speaker from FAO will highlight the worrying trends in global food security over the past year as commodity prices soar and tell us of FAO’s experience with pro-poor biofuel projects. Speakers from Ireland will tell us of the latest developments in the EU and Irish market on biofuel policies and technological breakthroughs. The impact of the developed country biofuel policies on developing countries will also be addressed. So, if you are wondering whether biofuels can help to mitigate the impact of global warming, or whether they are causing more damage to global food security, come along to this informative and important conference. Speakers to include: Mirella Salvatore FAO, Camilla Moreno from Brazil’s Terra de Direitos, Negusu Akililu from Ethiopia’s Forum for the Environment, Jerry Murphy UCC, Andrew Boswell of BiofuelWatch (tbc). If you would like to attend this conference please complete and print this booking form and return it to Ethical Development Action, 8, St. Patrick’s Terrace, Lower Glanmire Road, Cork.
